Utility Locates and Concrete Projects: Edmonton Homeowners’ Guide

Before we cut, demolish, trench, or pour, we arrange utility locates in the Argyll area and across Edmonton. Locates protect people, property, and schedules. We manage the process, mark the work zone, and plan the build so your project moves forward safely.
Why utility locates matter on concrete work
Buried gas, power, communications, and water lines can sit close to driveways, sidewalks, patios, and garage slabs. A safe project starts with confirmed locations. We coordinate Click Before You Dig requests and integrate the results into our layout, joint plan, and access route. That keeps saw cuts, excavation, and equipment clear of conflict points.
Where locates fit in our process
From the first call, we map the scope and confirm if cutting, trenching, or removals are involved. We then request the required utility locates and set a build sequence that respects the marked areas. If a line crosses the planned slab or walkway, we adjust joint spacing, slab edges, or equipment paths to avoid risk. We also plan staging so trucks, mini skid steers, and hoses stay off marked corridors.
Services in Edmonton that require locates
Concrete cutting for windows and side-door entrances, slab cutting for plumbing trenches, and trench cutting for new services all need clear, up-to-date marks. Demolition and removal work also proceeds only after the site is cleared. For driveway replacements, we check the apron and boulevard for buried assets before any curb, sidewalk, or approach work. For new slabs or patios, we confirm routes for compaction and drainage improvements before we dig.
How we prepare the site after locates
We set barriers, caution tape, and poly sheeting to protect surfaces and surroundings. We use water suppression to keep dust down during cutting and breaking. We then form the pour, place reinforcement, and pour to spec while keeping a safe buffer around marked utilities. For sidewalks in narrow side yards, we work by hand and with a mini skid steer to keep control inside the safe zone.
What we need from you
Please provide clear access and identify any private utilities you know about inside the property. Tell us about sump pumps, irrigation, lighting, or aftermarket lines that may not appear in public records. We coordinate with your other trades so plumbing penetrations and sleeves are accounted for before we pour. You can reach us by call, text, or email at any time during planning.
Cost and timing factors
We do not post fixed prices because every site is different. Pricing depends on base preparation, finish type, site access, and what the slab will be used for. When cutting or trenching is involved, the volume and thickness of concrete, haul-away, and backfill/grading affect cost. We provide a free written quote valid for 30 days, explain options such as broom, exposed aggregate, or stamped finishes, and schedule a start usually within two to three weeks depending on job size and location.
Standards we build to after locates are cleared
For residential driveways we pour a minimum 4 inch slab with 10 mm rebar on a 19 inch grid over 4 inches of compacted 20 mm road crush. We set a 1 percent slope away from structures and place control joints about every 8 feet. For exterior broom finishes we use air-entrained mixes. For stamped surfaces we seal with EX25 medium gloss. For exposed aggregate we recommend a shiny medium-gloss sealer, with an anti-slip additive available on request. For broom finishes, sealing is optional and recommended after cure. If weather is good, excavation to pour can be completed in one day. No vehicle traffic for at least two weeks after a pour, weather dependent.
Assurance, coverage, and payments
We respond within one business day and can arrange a site visit within 24 hours for urgent work. We carry CGL and WCB. We serve Edmonton and nearby neighbourhoods within 50 km of Argyll; travel fees beyond 50 km are quoted case-by-case. We work Monday to Saturday, 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, with Sundays in peak season and after-hours available with no surcharge. No deposit is required. Balance is due on substantial completion by e-transfer, cash, cheque, or bank draft.
Warranty note and limits
On new pours we cover workmanship for one year for cracks wider than a quarter inch and repair those cracks. Hairline cracks are normal and not covered. Repair projects do not carry a published warranty. Where permits are required for scope such as curb or approach changes, we obtain permits on request.
